BLIDNER: A Tennessee couple was sentenced to 35 years in prison after forcing the mans 5-year-old daughter to drink excessive amounts of grape soda as punishment, causing her death. Randall Lee Vaughn, 42, and Mary Lavonne Vaughn, 59, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated child neglect in a plea agreement Monday, according to the Kingsport Times News. Theyre going where they belong, Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said. In the deal accepted by Hawkins County Criminal Court Judge John Dugger, the Vaughns will spend 20 years in prison without eligibility for parole for the murder charge and 15 years with a 60% release eligibility for the abuse charge. It is an effective life sentence for the pair that forced Alexa Linboom, 5, to drink about 2.5 liters of grape soda and water after the girl stole a sip of her stepmothers drink, Attorney General Dan Armstrong said. Although the girl screamed in pain and became unconscious, the Surgoinsville pair did not take the girl to the hospital for hours on Jan. 1, 2012. The vast amount of beverages caused Linbooms head to swell and herniate, causing her death, according to an autopsy report. Prosecutors sought a long sentence without parole to prevent a process of trials and appeals that can emotionally harm Randall Lee Vaughns other children, Armstrong said. My number one concern was trying to minimize the trauma to the remaining siblings as much as possible, and this seemed to be the best way to do that, Armstrong said. The couple had faced life in prison without parole.
