My own contribution for the first day of the spring... one of the most famous romances by Tchaikovsky, but not only because of its sentimental mood, nor because of Goethes text... Even if a song written in his first years, I read in the score a compelling mastery, as a composer, in the way he progressively brings the noble main musical theme to a climax, after a dialogue with the second theme, after the voices climax: the incredible feature is the melody developped by the right hand of the piano, during the voices climax, and concluding it... towards eternity! That theme is very much like those of Tchaikovskys latest (and so great!) Symphonies, or symphonic poems, or, say, those developped during Pikovaya Dama... Here is Goethes original text in German: Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt Weiß, was ich leide! This is the way it comes in Russian: And this is the song itself, with the marvellous piano accompagniment performed by Carole Villiaumey: https://youtube/watch?v=JGIxl26Z7Gs
