My pastor, Mykola Illyuk, spoke eloquently about the importance of religious liberty at a recent Springfield City Council meeting. He should know. The Soviet government marginalized, persecuted, and killed Christians. He is concerned about the proposed GLBT anti-discrimination ordinance, which discriminates against Christians, Muslims, Jews, and others. Under the ordinance, people would lose their right to practice their faith once they engage in commerce. If a wedding planner refuses to plan a gay wedding, she would be subject to fines and six months in jail. If a church allows advertising in its bulletin, but refuses to allow advertising for gay wedding services, the pastor would be subject to fines and six months in jail. The Springfield City Council is scheduled to vote on two proposed ordinances on October 13. Both violate the US Constitution and will cause disruption in our community. Both should be voted down. Pastor Illyuk pled, We aren’t trying to force our beliefs on anybody. We want to live at peace with everyone. Please don’t force your values on us. This is an issue of religious liberty.” I am grateful for Pastor Illyuks willingness to speak up in the public square, and for the credibility of the Slavic testimony, burnished by generations of persecution.
