My people perish for lack of knowledge - WHICH KNOWLEDGE? Hosea 4:6 is a verse which is very often incorrectly quoted by preachers and people. We say “the bible says, ‘My people perish for lack of knowledge’, so get knowledge: business knowledge so you know how to do it and prosper in it; go to school to get that degree or masters” etc etc. That is not the meaning of this verse. That is not what God was saying here. That is not the context in which He lamented that His people were ignorant. Let us look at the whole verse: “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. “ (Hosea 4:6 KJV) The NIV says the same thing: “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.” (Hosea 4:6 NIV) Clearly as we can see, God is talking about spiritual knowledge, not secular knowledge (e.g. business knowledge, masters degree etc). We see God saying He will reject them as priests (a spiritual office) because they have rejected knowledge. Does God reject us because we do not have a degree, or did not go to school or because we are not shrewd in business? No. Does having a degree, or going to going to school or having business knowledge qualify us to be priests? No, for indeed it is written, “…. [simply] consider your own call, brethren; not many [of you were considered to be] wise according to human estimates and standards, not many influential and powerful, not many of high and noble birth. [No] for God selected (deliberately chose) what in the world is foolish to put the wise to shame, and what the world calls weak to put the strong to shame” (1 Corinthians 1:26-27 Amplified Bible) Going back to Hosea 4:6, God goes on to say that because they have ignored His law, He will also ignore their children; God’s law is spiritual, not secular. Again it is clear even from just reading the whole verse that the knowledge God speaks of is spiritual knowledge. Please read the whole chapter of Hosea 4 for confirmation. You will see for yourself that the people are destroyed because they have no knowledge of God and His ways and His laws. By His grace, let us invoke this verse correctly, not in lack of knowledge as we have been doing. JESUS bless you and favour you in His HOLY Name, amen.
