My personal rules for engaging in theological or political debate - TopicsExpress

My personal rules for engaging in theological or political debate on Facebook: 1). When tempted to comment on a strangers post uninvited simply to point out their obvious (to me) error and air my superior views...I DONT 2). When someone I know says something publicly I disagree with, if that person and whatever topic are truly important to me, then I will address them directly, but I will engage with a non-accusatory question in an attempt to get to understanding. It sounds like you are saying ____. Is that what you meant? and go from there. 3). When I recognize someone (stranger or otherwise) is doing something potentially damaging to real people, I speak and I say exactly what I mean with no snark. 4). If I know the offending person and they insist on responding defensively and without humility, snark may be allowed off leash if it will work as an effective communication device. 5). If I do not know the offending person and they insist on responding defensively and without humility, I cease to engage that person and focus privately with the person(s) being hurt if possible. I came up with these rules learning the hard way and stepping in it more than a few times. What are your rules? Do you have any?
