My perspective on the ALS Bucket Challenge: As a professional - TopicsExpress

My perspective on the ALS Bucket Challenge: As a professional begger/advocate I am somewhat amused at the controversy surfacing over the ALS Bucket Challenge. Having watched what this disease did to my brother-in-law Steven Russon, I think it is nothing short of a miracle that the disease is finally getting the attention it needs in order to prevent others from suffering. I put in water wells in Africa, I fight HIV/AIDS in Swaziland, I advocate for women in Kenya and I fight child migration in Honduras, to name a few of my causes. Do I wish you had contributed $15 million to my causes? You bet! However, the fact that you are contributing to something and that you are having discussions with your children about this disease and then affirm the culture of philanthropy that continues to define us as a nation is rather refreshing. Worried about wasted water? Take fewer showers, wash your car once a month instead of once a week, drink less soda, and by all means stop the water balloon fights. But pouring a bucket of water over somebodys head to raise $15 million and to raise awareness around this killer - pour away. My other causes will be okay. Perhaps, if we stopped spending $11 billion dollars in every election cycle then we could address the water shortages in the West. Now that is a cause for which you can hose me down with a fire hose.
