My profile photo today is on my mother, Margaret Drysdale, RAF, 1944 at the age of 18. While I never got to meet my grandfather and my father rarely discussed his war time experiences my mother told me of many of her experiences during that time. She was trained as a Radio Operator (Sparks) and was fluent in Morse Code her entire life. She was stationed at an Allied airbase in Ireland and her job in the RAF was to send coded messages to bomber crews flying missions over Germany. One story that has stuck with me is of the friendly American bomber crew member that stopped to give her a lift to the base in his Jeep. They became friends and she would hitch a ride with him and his crew members often. Then, he stopped driving by and she never saw him again. While she never did find out what happened to him she suspects he was lost on a mission. He was probably no older than 20. So, when your 18 year old is in the basement playing Call of Duty all day long, think about the young men and women who did it for real and for the ones who didnt come home. War is not a game.
