My recent trip to accompany my brother on his literal drive to retirement in California has me thinking a lot about the nature of change. I have come to believe it is the universe’s most persistent force. While Einstein might have been right that nothing can be either created or destroyed, virtually anything can and will be changed. Life evolves to be a series of “good byes” and “hellos.” Though I learned from my late wife’s passing (in August four years ago) that nothing lasts forever, I am just beginning to come to grips with the idea that we must say good bye to everything… sometimes in tiny moments and other times in huge chunks. Things, thankfully, become less significant as I learn this more, a blessing. I suspect that some will find this to be SO depressing. However I don’t think it has to be at all. It is after all, life. The ability to say goodbye, the idea of missing what’s past, the relinquishing of things is simply proof that we are, for the moment, alive. I hope to be able to do so more and more unencumbered, less attached and able to devote more of the energy I have left to love and positive change. That seems to me to be the only route on this drive through life that makes any sense at all. The rest is just fluff.
