My remarks from todays press event at Maine Military Supply: --- Good afternoon. My name is Todd Tolhurst, and I am the President of Gun Owners of Maine. Gun Owners of Maine is an all-volunteer, non-profit, non-partisan grassroots organization of over 4,000 Mainers dedicated to preserving and protecting the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Our mission is to educate and inform Mainers about safe and effective gun use, the law, their gun rights and threats to those rights. As a civil rights watchdog group , we pay close attention to the positions of local, state, and federal politicians and candidates on gun rights issues , and we grade them on those positions, without regard to political party or ideology . Not every candidate fares well in our evaluation. Bruce Poliquin does. Bruce Poliquin shares our belief in the critical importance of the right to keep and bear arms, and as a result has earned our highest rating, a grade of A. As Congress continues to find ever newer and more inventive ways of infringing on the gun rights of Americans, we believe that Bruce Poliquin will well represent the interests of Mainers in protecting and expanding our gun rights. We believe we need more people like Bruce in Congress to halt the tide of anti-gun legislation , and begin to roll back the accumulated infringements of the past half century and more. --- In a February blizzard on the State House steps, Gov. LePage promised a gathering of hundreds of Mainers: While I’m your governor, they will not infringe on our rights, The Second Amendment and our state constitution is very clear, and free people — law-abiding citizens — should have the ability to carry guns. That’s what keeps us safe and free Gov. LePage, in characteristic fashion, said what he meant, and then proceeded to do as he said. The Governor kept his promise to the people of Maine to defend the most fundamental of our civil rights, using his veto against a number of anti-gun bills which passed the House and Senate. It is because of the Governors staunch defense of gun rights, not just in word, but in deed, that we have awarded him our highest grade of A. One day, Maine may have a Legislature which does not seek to extinguish our gun rights. Until then, we need a Governor like Paul LePage.
