My soul was saddened today upon finding out that actor, director, choreographer and dancer Geoffrey Holder had passed away. You may not recognize his name, but if you were a kid during the 70s youd probably know him best as the 7-UP Uncola Man. Geoffrey held a very special place in my heart. Many of you probably dont know that I have written some childrens books, based on a character, the Dream Dragon, that I created in a poem I wrote for creative writing when I was 17 years old. From the moment I conjured up the Dream Dragon I knew the voice I wanted him to have. It had to be a deep, comforting, yet powerful voice, with a hint of an accent from some far off place. I knew that Geoffrey Holder WAS the voice of my Dream Dragon character. I never thought my Dream Dragon would ever materialize in any way, but somehow he ended up taking shape in the form of a childrens book about a decade after he was created. I am a firm believer that phonics are an effective tool for early readers, so I wanted to incorporate audio with my first Tuck Em In Bedtime Story, Dreamtime Friend. I wrote a Dream Dragon theme song, Mystical Dream, and had music composed for it by Mike Kurrle. I decided to contact Mr. Holder to see if he would be interested in singing my theme song and recording a reading of the story. I was absolutely thrilled when he agreed. The entire process was amazing and the end result left me in awe. I had dreamed of this incredible voice from my childhood being the voice of my character and it happened. I have put together a short video using some of the illustrations from the book and the audio from Mystical Dream. I hope you enjoy this tribute to Mr. Geoffrey Holder, whos amazing voice gave my Dream Dragon wings!
