My statement on the 1916 Rising Moore Street site ahead of tonights Dublin City Council monthly meeting: People Before Profit will vote to save ‘the most important historic site in modern Irish history’ Ahead of tonight’s Dublin City Council vote on the proposed disposal of site 24/25 Moore Street/Moore Lane/O’Rahilly Parade, the People Before Profit Alliance has stated clearly its intention to vote against a “land swap” deal which, if passed, would pave the way for the destruction of the historic 1916 Moore Street battlefield site, the “last remaining urban battlefield site in Europe, if not the world”*, and the construction of a monstrous shopping centre by a busted private property developer. Speaking ahead of tonight’s meeting, Cllr John Lyons, a member of Dublin City Council’s Moore Street Advisory Committee, stated: “Myself and my four fellow People Before Profit councillors will be voting against this land swap deal tonight as it’s the toxic legacy of the Celtic Tiger period. If this deal with Chartered Lands’ Joe O’Reilly, a busted property developer whose loans are in NAMA, friend of Fianna Fail and member of Anglo-Irish Bank’s infamous Maple Ten, was to proceed Dublin City Council would be responsible for the destruction of what is, in the opinion of the National Museum of Ireland, “the most important historic site in modern Irish history”. People Before Profit will vote against this happening and will campaign in the times ahead to ensure that the Moore Street site becomes a full-scale historical district, a unique education and tourist asset for the city Dublin, a historical monument that all the citizens of this Republic can be proud of in the years to come. *Quote from the Imperial War Museum ENDS____________________________________________________
