My thought for the day; ‘The Problems That Confront Us’ There are a good number of people who believe that industry must be granted preferential treatment. Their right to profit is now seen by many as more important than the rights of the people. During the Bush administration the wealthiest amongst us were granted huge tax breaks (totaling now into the trillions) under the guise that to do so would create jobs. After all, haven’t we all been taught that it’s the rich that create jobs? This is the prevailing mindset of the Representatives who initiated these changes and continue to advance legislation benefiting industry. The taxpayers have been fleeced by being forced to subsidize the largest corporations through government assistance programs because they refuse to pay their employees a living wage; despite the rise in productivity. The stock market has never reached higher levels but the benefit has certainly not trickled down to the population. In fact the taxpayers were forced to foot the bill not only to subsidize the employees but also to bail out the industries that were collapsing under the weight of their own malicious, predatory practices. What became of all that money? Did they create jobs as we were assured they would do? Of course they did- only problem was they created jobs in India, China, Mexico, Canada, you name it (they went wherever they could secure slave-wage employees and avoid environmental and worker protection policies and now that they have dried up the consumer resources used to purchase their products, they plan on spreading their influence even further with the new Trans-Pacific partnership. Now that their money has been put to such good use they are busy passing ‘right-to-work’ (for less) legislation to procure slave-wage labor here at home as well as on foreign shores. Because of their economic policies the middle-class of America is rapidly disappearing. One in seven families now requires some government assistance simply to survive. We’ve even coined a term for this new portion of the population; we call them the ‘Working Poor.’ But industry’s efforts to show ever-increasing profits is insatiable; it has now blossomed into a new form of slavery right here at home; some have moved into the ‘For-Profit’ prison business; operating factories with prison labor at a rate even the poorest Chinese peasant couldn’t work for. No wonder we have a larger prison population than any other nation on Earth. Because of the mindset behind this push to globalize, our Representatives have made it possible for those ‘wise’ entrepreneurs to avoid paying taxes on any money made out of the country until it is brought back into the country; assuring, of course that much of it never comes back. How convenient it is to make products overseas, (or incorporate out of the country) cash in on the American market (decimating existing businesses who cant compete with the cheap imports) and then dodge taxes on much of the profits they’ve made. A huge fortune is now stored (estimated to be in the trillions) in off-shore tax havens like the Cayman Islands. In the meantime they are convincing many that those who have been disenfranchised and marginalized are the ones to blame for the problems that confront us. Who exactly is to blame?
