My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those - TopicsExpress

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those senselessly murdered by a mentally ill individual this past weekend in Isla Vista. It is a terrible experience that no one should ever have at any point in their life, but also one that shouldnt be reduced to a single cause or twisted by gun advocates as an attack on their agenda. Why is it that the american and some international media gave this tragedy mere hours before reducing it to a single event with a single cause (although they cant seem to agree on this cause)? The same thing happened after Sandy Hook last year and will probably occur the next time this happens. The worst aspect of this current state of media is that now we have turned a terrible event into a media spectacle and put the people who are simply trying to mourn their losses at the center of it all. In this case there are three issues at the center of the media stage, but for some reason the media outlets only cover one topic of discussion: gun control, mental health care availability, or misogyny while maybe mentioning the other two. This is both an irresponsible and inaccurate way to spread information, especially from the media that is supposed to keep us informed of what is happening in the world. In scientific research, if you cannot account for a variable or an unknown, then any of the information you produce is unacceptable in the scientific community. Otherwise you have to figure out how to account for that variables impact on your hypothesis or how to remove it from the equation completely. In an event like this though, there is no way to remove any of the individual variables that contributed to the delinquency of this individuals perception of his place in society. Any discussion and potential changes that our country makes from that discussion (I remain hopeful even though nothing has changed in my lifetime) must be the result of analyzing the entire picture of what has happened and why, but can we please just let the families and friends of those murdered mourn and remember these individuals for the great people I am sure they were in their individual lives rather than turning them into media martyrs.
