My usual sitter had asked me to e-mail her with my home remedies for cold/flu season. Figured Id share em here too. Tea tree oil can and should be put in the humidifier. Chicken Soup- this is a nobrainer but its not going to work unless youve roasted the chicken and made your own stock(3 bay leaves-no more no less). Put Rosemary in this if you have accompanying headaches or body pains( I grow some in my apartment if youd like some). Sleepytime Tea Throat Soother-any tea with honey is good because honey is an antibacterial and coats irritated mucus membranes. I get this brand specifically because it has Slippery Elm in it-which is more effective in soothing a throat than honey even. It also had a myriad of other medicinal properties. Slippery Elm does grow around here, I just havent picked any. Be careful though, it will interfere with the absorption of other medicines! Pine Needle Tea- is a natural decongestant(and has more vitamin C than an entire lemon), you can find it anytime and its easy to make. Look for the newest growth on a White Pine (its the lighter needles at the end of the branch) and pick those. I usually chop 1/2 cup needles up small and add it to 2 cups simmering water (vitamin C is heat-intolerant) for only 10 Min. Strain and add honey if you need to but pine is naturally sweet. Whatever needles you have left are really good for soaking in, as it eases arthritis and muscle strains. Turmeric- antibacterial, antimicrobial, high in antioxidants, manganese and iron. It works best with almond milk but you can use the regular stuff. Heat it (but dont boil) and add some honey, ginger and cinnamon. Also: goes great on green beans and/or potatoes with my last but not least favorite..... Garlic! Everybody knows you can kill just about anything with garlic. If youre man enough, a shotglass full of Apple Cider Vinegar in the morning will kill the half that garlic doesnt get. Ill warn you though, ACV goes down a little rough, I chase mine with tomato juice. This is just an old witches tale, but if you cut up an onion and place it in the corner of the room of the sickly, its supposed to draw the infection right out of the air. It may be crazy but Ive always done it anyway-yes...sometimes after a few days I retrieve a black onion, so there may be something to it.
