My vegan story I became vegan almost four years ago after finding out about the treatment of dairy cows and their calves by the dairy industry. This particular night, I watched presentation on t.v. by Animals Australia on how bobby calves are taken from their mothers not long after birth and trucked away to be killed. Seeing those babies, still unsteady on their feet, delicate and frightened being roughly pushed along to meet their deaths shocked and saddened me deeply. I was also angry. Angry that I never knew this happened and angry at myself for not knowing and consuming dairy products at all. (I had been vegetarian for twenty six years previous to this). I returned my milk and yoghurt to the supermarket the very next day. I soon began reseaching factory farming operations and learning how animals bred for food are treated in Australia. I learnt pretty quickly that cats and dogs (pets) are protected from harm in this country whilst food animals are treated as things, often enslaved, raped, tortured; chickens beaks seered off; baby male chicks killed in horrific ways; sow stalls; piglets tails, teeth and testicles hacked off; cows horns sawn and burnt off etc. The list of horror goes on... My research also included all aspects of veganism and the health benefits of a plant-based diet. I read many books, including The China Study and learnt just how detrimental animal products are to our health. Will Tuttle, author of The world peace diet helped open my eyes to the spiritual and cultural benefits of veganism. I was lucky to stumble across Animal Liberation Victorias website and the phrase There is no such thing a humane slaughter has since become an ingrained truth in my mind. As a very spiritual person, my levels of compassion and empathy have grown since becoming vegan. My sensitivity has become more acute. This wasnt easy at the start, but I have become a stronger person because of it. I remember forcing myself to watch the torturous practises forced on animals and each time I watched an animal suffer, I felt myself suffer as well. When we hurt others, we hurt ourselves. I am now a very healthy 50 y.o. vegan and will never be turning back. I would love to help anyone who wants to turn towards a compassionate lifestyle. I recommend the 30 day Vegan easy challenge run by Animal Liberation Victoria. #VeganEasyChallenge #NewYearsResolution #myveganstory
