My wife and I have just returned to Australia from a significantly memorable trip to Fairbanks and Yellowknife specifically to witness the Aurora.... The momentum to do this trip has been fuelled by the enthusiasm of the members of both Aurora Borealis Notifications and Aurora Australis Tasmania. Watching your dialogue over the last 12 months has provided great insight into the search for and then the fine art of photographing such an incredible display of nature. Having booked the trip back in January I cannot tell you how your post Carl Gruber (AAT) on about the 8th Sept heralding M class flares given we were flying out on the 10th... It turned out we were under heavy cloud in Anchorage when the first wave hit...and as luck would show for our few nights in Fairbanks, were without lights.... Somewhat philosophical we moved on to Yellowknife and for 4 of the 5 nights spent outside we were blessed with an incredible and almost constant show in near perfect conditions. I would be very grateful if admin would allow this note to be posted even though the images are now about 10-14 days old, as I want to communicate to the dedicated watchers from both groups, that your enthusiasm and insight has been a significant factor that motivated us to travel half way around the world to see it for ourselves....THANK YOU Margaret Sonnemann, Amy Stratman and all contributors! All images shot with a Sony Nex 5n with a 16mm f2.8 lens and where mentioned also with a fisheye adaptor
