My wife asked me this- Why are stores not giving their employees - TopicsExpress

My wife asked me this- Why are stores not giving their employees time off during the holidays to be with their families?...consider- back in the 50s unions were at their peak membership in America- Union contracts stated that workweeks were Monday through Friday and if you were required to work on Saturday you would be paid at the rate of one and one half times your normal pay and all Sunday work would be premium pay of double time and Holidays, triple time. To prevent unionization of their workers most companies followed suit and gave the same benefits as unionized workers- Polaroid Corporation would give their non-union workers 5 cents an hour more money than the unionized Kodak workers on every contract negotiations and tell their workers that they didnt need a union- they got more...fast forward to today- unions are under constant attack from corporations, the Right Wing of the Republican Party to weaken workers rights and to try to destroy unions- the market share of union membership has suffered. While the overall membership has been steady, the growth of population has grown while union membership has been static- today unions represent about 6-7% of the private sector and 11-12% of the public sector- the resulting decline mirrors the shrinkage of the Middle Class and the effects in wages and work rules
