N3 crash truck impounded for allegedly having faulty brakes Exact details around the multiple vehicle pile-ups - in three separate crashes - which occurred on Friday on the N3 between Montrose and Van Reenen are still sketchy with FleetWatch receiving conflicting reports of the causes as well as of the number of dead and injured. What we can confirm is that one of the crashes was caused by a truck running into the back of the car of a woman. The woman was killed. According to one source who was on the scene, the truck was inspected at the accident scene and its brakes were found to be faulty. The truck was impounded and will be fully inspected early next week. Weather conditions in the area were awful with heavy mist and light rain making driving conditions extremely dangerous. While FleetWatch will release further details once received, we publish below two videos taken by Patrick OLeary when travelling in the area in misty conditions with Philip Hull, founder of the The Road Safety Foundation, some time ago. One was during the day (first video) and the other during the night (second video). We publish these so as to give an idea of what conditions are like in the Van Reenen Pass area when mist sets in. And it gets worse than this with Hull saying visibility can be reduced to a mere 10 metres. Having a roadworthy vehicle with all lights, brakes and everything else - including a trained and alert driver – working is essential for safety. See for yourself and please make sure your truck, car, taxi or whatever it is you are driving, is roadworthy at all times https://youtube/watch?v=OIQYOoFJLZ8
