NASAs Antares exploded after take off on Wednesday and now, just a few hours ago, a Virgin Galactic test flight crashed resulting in the death of one pilot and the injury of another. While the death and injury are tragic, I also worry that the close proximity of these disasters will result in some bad press (as seen in the video I linked) and have a negative impact on the approval or funding of space exploration, which could very well set us back any number of years. NASA has been fighting the good fight to spur interest (and funding) for its programs and science has become more and more fetishized in pop culture recently which, personally, I think is great. I just wonder what impact these events may have on humanitys space exploration in the short and long term. Or perhaps Im just being pessimistic?
