NDP demands immediate government decision to keep Northern parks open Queen’s Park – Today Gilles Bisson, the NDP critic for Natural Resources and Forestry, demanded the Minister responsible for Northern parks make an immediate decision to renew a pilot project agreement to keep them open. “For the last two years, the parks have made money. The pilot project has been successful, but you have yet to make a decision to renew that agreement or not. If you don’t renew the agreement soon, people are going to move and they’re going to go elsewhere making those parks less profitable,” Bisson said. “Minister, when can we expect a response from you in regards to the renewal of this agreement?” Bisson said that after the Liberal government shut down access to a number of Northern provincial parks including Fushimi Lake, Rene Brunelle and Ivanhoe Lake, Northern residents, area mayors and NDP MPPs put together a successful proposal that kept those parks open. The MPP for Timmins-James Bay called on the government for an immediate decision to renew support for that proposal. “People who are seasonal campers need to know that they’ve got a place to go this spring. If you delay the decision to reopen the parks until sometime later in January and February, they will lose their spots, but they’re going to be available in other parks, so we need to have an answer soon, not later,” Bisson said. “I’m going to ask the minister again. Will you please stand up for northern Ontario and say, ‘Yes, we will reopen those parks next spring’?” youtu.be/s0kucTC4lMU
