GARDEN egg, locally known as anyara or igba in the Eastern and Western parts of Nigeria, is now in season. This fruit varies in size, shape (ellipsoid to elongate) and colour (green or white-streaked green). It is highly valued delicacy and constituent of African food. Obese and overweight people and those who want to prevent cancer can also benefit from this nutritious fruit because of its low calories, vitamins and high moisture contents. A study indicated that garden egg could be used for the treatment of stomach ulcer. The researchers attribute this suggestion to its high fibre and low soluble carbohydrate content. Eating garden egg regularly helps in maintaining a healthy liver because of its richness in antioxidants vitamins. It also prevents constipation and promotes good vision (eye sight).
