NEW SHORT COURSE IN DIPLOMACY IN JULY In the framework of our Master of International Relations programme we are pleased to inform you of the upcoming Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) Diplomacy and Public Policy Course, entitled “Proven Treaty, Political Challenge: The CTBT and Multistakeholder Security”, to take place from 15 to 19 July, 2013. The online course – available directly through our e-learning platform - will cover political and diplomatic aspects of the CTBT, its history and current challenges and prospects for its entry-into-force and universalization. It will include the following lecturers and panellists: Professor Siegfried Hecker, Director Emeritus, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Senior Fellow and Professor, Stanford University Ambassador Jaap Ramaker, the Netherlands Dr James Acton, Senior Associate, Nuclear Policy Program, Carnegie Endowment Dr Pierce Corden, Visiting Scholar, American Association for the Advancement of Science Mark Fitzpatrick, Director, Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Programme, International Institute for Strategic Studies Dr Rebecca Johnson, Executive Director, Acronym Institute Dr Patricia Lewis, Research Director, International Security, Chatham House Jenifer Mackby, Adjunct Fellow and Consultant, International Security Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies Andreas Persbo, Executive Director, VERTIC Dr Daniel Pinkston, Deputy Project Director, North East Asia Project, International Crisis Group For ANOBS participants, the course will comprise an online e-learning component combined with a one-week live lecture seminar style course to be held in Vienna, Austria and streamed online. Topics will include: The role of the CTBT in the nuclear non-proliferation regime; The CTBT in a regional context; Multilateral arms control and verification; The third announced nuclear test by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea on 12 February 2013; Advancing the Prague agenda. Participants will cover the fundamentals of the Treaty and its verification regime through the online e-learning modules, which will be followed by a week of in-depth lectures and high-level panel discussions on the diplomatic and policy aspects of the Treaty. There will also be a simulation exercise that will challenge participants to put into practice the ideas and concepts discussed throughout the course. The CTBT Diplomacy and Public Policy Course is part of the education and outreach activities of the CTBTO, aimed at training the next generation of CTBT experts in all aspects of the Treaty. A Certificate of Successful Completion issued by CTBTO will be awarded to all participants who complete all of the course requirements.
