Get your tickets now: burnsfilmcenter.org/films/buy-tickets?date=1397016000#75158 THE HISTORY - Woody Guthrie’s Jewish mother-in-law Aliza Greenblatt’s Yiddish poetry had a strong artistic effect on Guthrie, who studied Jewish religion and culture and incorporated these themes into his songs and artwork. Woody wrote lyrics about Hanukkah, about Jewish history, and about spiritual life. After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. Lost for almost 30 years, Guthries Hanukkah lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woodys daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked The Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics. Tonight at 7:30pm, Nora Guthrie will present a delightful multimedia program highlighting the artistic impacts of her father Woody’s relationship with his Jewish mother-in-law, Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt. The program includes rare family and archival photographs, music – including excerpts from The Klezmatics’ Wonder Wheel and Happy Joyous Hanukkah – writings, and artwork that illuminate that extraordinary personal and creative relationship. SNEAK PEAK: LISTEN to “Gonna Get Through This World,” released on the Grammy Award winning album WONDER WHEEL. Words by Woody Guthrie, Music by Lisa Gutkin of The Klezmatics.
