NEWS AROUND THE REGION Jakarta, Mon: Indonesia has got 9.1 million hectares of oil palm plantations making it the undisputed world number 1 producer of palm oil.This achievement is attained through some social costs which have given rise to widespread complaints about the haze and the polluted environment fanned by the winds. Though deemed economically essential and of Indonesias interest to continually increase acreage of palm oil cultivation,at the expense of healthy environment defiled by its slash-and-burn technique of clearing its jungles could not be justifiable.The Air Pollution Indices recorded each year during the dry seasons are clear indication of the extensive damage opening burning has done to Indonesia and even neighbouring countries of Singapore,Malaysia to as far as Thailand,Vietnam and Cambodia. The Indonesian govt should take heed of the ill-effect of pollution caused by the jerebu or haze each year and should extend its moratorium banning conversion of forests into new plantations to reduce the worsening effect of climate change due to greed of corrupt officials who perforce,are taking a lenient view of environmental pollution in lieu of bribery.
