NEWS FROM PARKS DEPARTMENT: TrapBags to be Installed!!! After the completion of the mandatory public comment period, we recently received permission from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation to install TrapBags along Rockaway Beach. We anticipate beginning installation on Monday, June 10. This installation was designed by engineers and landscape architects, and will proceed under their supervision. TrapBags are large, sand-filled geotextile bags that resist flood and storm surge. They have been used successfully around the world to protect homes and businesses from flood waters. Recently, TrapBags were installed on Fire Island to protect homes along the shoreline. The first phase of this work will be the placement of these TrapBags from Beach 126th Street to Beach 108th Street, an area where there has been significant beach loss. We are also planning for a second phase of work with the installation of protective measures from Beach 108th to Beach 26th Street.
