NEWS RELEASE August 16, 2014 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS FROM VOLUNTEER FARM WOODSTOCK-The Volunteer Farm, which gives food banks and food pantries free vegetables to feed the hungry in a third of Virginia, has issued a call for volunteers to help harvest a bountiful crop. We have a shortage of volunteers during this time of the year when families are busy with returning to school, Bob Blair, Volunteer Farm CEO said. But the vegetables are growing and ready for picking now, and a church mission team could easily harvest a ton of food in four hours. This is a good opportunity for anyone wanting to help feed their hungry neighbors. A lot of food will be wasted if we do not have enough volunteers in the next few weeks. He said volunteers of all ages from churches, schools, civic groups, businesses, families and individuals are needed to harvest beans, cabbage, cucumbers, peppers, potatoes, squash and the harvest will continue until a freeze in late November. Those not wishing to work in the fields can help in the office assembling fundraising letters. The ten year old Volunteer Farm has produced more than 300 tons of food to help feed the elderly, disabled, children, and the unemployed or underemployed. The 40 acre farm has been aided by some 18,000 volunteers from 42 states and 27 foreign countries. More than five tons of fruits and vegetables have been harvested already this year and hauled away by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank and some individual food pantries. The fresh, nutritious vegetables supplement the canned and processed food normally distributed by the food banks. The farm is open six days a week from 8 am until 3:30 pm, and closed Sundays. Information on volunteering is available at VolunteerFarm.org or 540-459-3478 during business hours. Tax-deductible donations may be made online or mailed to Volunteer Farm, 277 Crider Lane, Woodstock, VA 22664. 540-459-3478 [email protected] http:volunteerfarm.org 277 Crider Lane Woodstock, VA 22664
