NEWS UPDATES AT 12 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. Uganda joins the rest of the world today to commemorate Disaster Risk Reduction day under the theme; Resilience is for life: Older persons and disasters” minister of state for Relief and disaster preparedness Musa Ecweru attributes most of disasters to human practices. He says Disaster risk reduction is a responsibility for everyone and that in the next few days the ministry will launch a model sub-county disaster committee. The minister has also revealed that a National disaster control center is to be launched today by the Vice President of Uganda. Ministry of defence has today kick started general recruitment for The Uganda people’s defence forces (UPDF). The exercise will run till the 26th of October 2014. Recruitment centres are in various districts among which are Iganga, Jinja, Mukono, Wakiso, Kamuli, Kampala. Those who intend to enroll must be 18 years above citizens of Uganda, have minimum formal education of s.4, be healthy, medically fit, ready to undergo medical examination and a road run to test endurance. Tests will be done on the five senses. HIV/AIDS and pregnancy tests will be conducted too. Students of Kyambogo University are on strike. They are protesting the decision by the university to continue offering courses that are not sanctioned by the National Council for Higher Education. Kenya airways employees at the Uganda office have laid down their tools over nonpayment. They say they have not been paid for some time now. The workers who include drivers and booking agents are also protesting unfair salary ranges as citing that Ugandan workers are paid less compared to their counterparts working in Kenya. However, management has outsourced staff to attend to the clients and work has not been paralyzed. Kampala Capital City Authority is today carrying out a public Auction of items confiscated by the authority enforcement teams on Kampala streets. The unclaimed items being auctioned by KCCA include motor vehicles, motor cycles, bicycles and other assorted items that have been at KCCA stores on 6th street for more than 6 months. The public auction will be running from today until Wednesday, 15th of October 2014. South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has returned to court for sentencing after being convicted of killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius was found guilty of the culpable homicide of Ms Steenkamp last month but he was cleared of murder. His psychologist was the first defence witness to speak at the sentencing hearing, which could last several days. Pistorius faces up to 15 years in jail, although Judge Thokozile Masipa may suspend the sentence or impose a fine.
