NEWS UPDATES AT 9 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. President Yoweri Museveni is expected in the eastern district of Tororo for the official opening of the Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group Co. Ltd. Lv Weipong’s firm is set for mining phosphates in Sigulu hills, Tororo district with a 49 year lease secured from the community. They are expected to start with the fertilizer project and later venture into steel mills and hydro power stations because of their high demand. Guangzhou Dongsong Energy Group has investments in the development of hydro power stations, power grid transmission, coal mine, organic agriculture. Several Civil society organizations spearheaded by Forum for women in democracy (FOWODE) are calling upon Ugandans to unite and conduct a public action against a tax proposal on kerosene. Speaking while launching a campaign dubbed the anti tadooba tax campaign 2014 that seeks 17000 signatures from people around the country against the tax proposal on kerosene, Patricia Munaabi Babiiha the executive director FOWODE says reinstating the excise duty on kerosene is in bad taste because it will have far reaching consequences on mothers who depend on paraffin to take care of the sick at home, rural health centers that depend on paraffin to help pregnant women especially in areas without electricity or solar energy, school children depend on paraffin to study at night in schools without electricity and the poor use paraffin for lighting to sell their produce in the markets or on the streets at night. Over 95% of the country’s population especially people in rural areas depend on kerosene. The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Nutebi is expected to open the Buganda lukiiko today. The Lukiiko is expected to open at 10 this morning. The Kabaka is expected to address his subjects on issues concerning the Buganda kingdom. Meanwhile the Buganda premier has called on the kingdom subjects to act instead of talking if they want development. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said four-way talks on the crisis in eastern Ukraine had been difficult, but they had made progress. He spoke after meeting with his Ukrainian, Russian and French counterparts in Berlin on Sunday. Discussions focused on how to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and bring about a ceasefire in the east. Ukraines military has intensified its operation to expel rebels from two key eastern strongholds in recent weeks. In the latest development, Ukraine said its forces had advanced into the rebel-held city of Luhansk for the first time in months on Sunday.
