NICE GUYS TIE THEIR OWN NOOSE I don’t know how I summoned the courage. I guess every man has it somewhere within himself. She is so beautiful that the words just found themselves. She was telling me that she was sick of dating pricks and was ready for a nice guy. Nice guys tie their own noose. Well what about me, I asked? She looked at me with a look reserved for simpletons. She reached down to my wheelchair and gently touched my right arm. She did not say a word. She didn’t have to. The look on her face did the talking for her. The look on her face was somewhere between pity and a mock. Why did I ask? Why did I try? I had killed our conversation like a whale in Japanese hands. My attempt had been eaten like blubber. A customer had been standing in her window and had finally gained the courage to enter. She gently touched my arm, smiled again and followed the customer inside. Resigned I pushed my wheelchair down the road towards the bus stop. I catch buses. Is that why? That’s probably part of it. The wheelchair and the hearing aides probably don’t help either. Women want a winner. I am a loser. I have lost and am still losing. The bus finally arrived at my stop. It pulled up a distance from the curb. Do you want to get on, the driver shouted at me? The driver looked like a serial killer. No, I shouted back at him, I’m just waiting for Godot. I think I heard him sigh as he swung his little door open. I sighed too. A lady had to leave her seat so I could sit on the bus. I also heard her sigh as she rose from her seat. I said I was sorry as I flicked the three seats up. I patted my right knee and told her she could sit down if she wanted. She mouthed the words f-u-c-k y-o-u and flipped me the bird. Nice guys tie their own noose. Andrew Stuart Buchanan
