NIGER EAST LEADERS MOUNT PRESSURE ON UMAR TO CONTEST FOR SENATE Abu Nmodu — July 6, 2014 Leaders of Niger east senatorial district yesterday besieged the house of the governorship candidate of the defunct All Nigeria People Party (ANPP), Barrister David Umar, calling on him to take over the senate seat of the zone following the demise of Senator Dahiru Aweisu Kuta. The political leaders that cut across nine local government councils of the senatorial district include the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) Chairman, Umar Shuaibu. Shuaibu who led some politicians from Suleja local government described David Umar as a politician who was always ready to help the people and interact with the ordinary man in the society. Also speaking, another leader from Shiroro LGA, Suleiman Galadima Kogo, said that they were in his house to request him to contest while another leader, Solomon Nyaze fromTafa LGA said Umar should take the call from the people as a challenge. Attesting to the fact that the leaders cut across the political parties, a former Shiroro local government chairman of PDP, Alhaji Abdullahi Nagida, said that he should consider the calls by people for him to contest as a calling from God for him to serve the people. While most of the speakers acknowledged that the death of Senator Dahiru Aweisu Kuta was a great loss to the senatorial zone, they all agreed that they would work for David Umar as a man who has the political capacity to represent the zone. In his response, Barr Umar maintained that the calls of the people was actually the call of God and said that he cannot refuse the people of their request but disclosed that, they should give him the time to consult with the elders of the zone. Speaking further, David Umar said, “I have seen hope and I have seen encouragement and commitment; I am greatly humbled by this gathering. I have never been touched like this and I will consult our elders”. It would be recalled that Senator Kuta passed away early last month making the senatorial district’s seat vacant and by constitutional provision must be filled within three months through a bye-election.
