NIGERIA TOP COUNTRY AT AFRICAN JUNIOR CHAMPS, by Alfons Juck, EME News REDUIT (MRI, Sep 1): Nigeria ended as top country with 9 gold medals, 7 silvers and 3 bronzes at the African Junior Championships. Second South Africa 7-9-8, third Ethiopia 7-7-8, fourth Egypt 5-4-2 and fifth Kenya 4-9-4. From 29 competing countries 15 got medals. During last day top Ethiopian distance wins for World Youth silver winner Dawit Seyaum 4:09.00 PB in the 1500 m, second Tigist Gashaw 4:12.38 and third best Kenyan Sheila Chepngetich 4:13.15. Ansa Weldetsadik won for Ethiopia girls steeple 9:59.46 and Kahsay Berke the boys 800 m in solid PB 1:46.94. The only Kenyan win of the day on the track for Moses Mukono 13:54.36 in the 5000 m. Also to note Nigerian 200 m wins for Divine Oduduru 21.19 (-3.6) and Nkiruka Ukakwe 24.21 (-3.5). Algerian Dihia Haddar posted good 58.82 to win girls 400 m hurdles.
