NMCS STATEMENT ON- INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY National Movement of Catholic Students (NMCS) Zimbabwe today joins the United Nations and rest of the world in commemorating 2014 International Women’s day themed “Equality for women is progress for all.” International Women’s Day, which falls on 8 March, marks the celebration of achievements of women across fields. NMCS applauds the efforts by various national and international organisations in promoting equality for women in the quest for societal development. Chief among the steps for equality, we applaud the promotion of women and girls equal opportunities in the academic arena. It is of no doubt equality for women and girls in education systems is positive and encouraging and ultimately manifests in brilliant and talented female citizens who contribute to the success and development of nations and various institutions like NMCS. Equality for women, which is all persons’ responsibility, should not be promoted simply because of its being fair but also because it is a matter of fundamental human rights. NMCS also partake in promoting equality for girls by various means which include the female forums and retreats that aim at grooming able and visionary female leaders and to date am proud to be associated with a movement that have seen many student Catholic societies being led by progressive female leadership. It is of great importance to note that women and girls, most importantly students, have been exposed and subjugated to various inequalities that include poverty, discrimination and various forms of abuse and for all persons today we say the plight of women are not theirs only but we must collectively help as people of faith and responsible citizens as we are our brothers and sisters keepers. NMCS regional and institutional leaders should on this day and many others create platforms for female students in the faith to address their issues of concern. These will help us all, as the Holy Father Benedict XVI wrote in ‘Africae Munus’ to face our situations with courage and dignity. NMCS appeals to the government of Zimbabwe to commit and invest in time and resources to the constitutional provisions of Chapter 4 section 80 Rights of women, which reads (1) Every women has full and equal dignity of the person with men and this includes equal opportunities in political, economic and social activities.
