NURSES PREVENT SPOUSES FROM MATERNITY WARD AT LIKOMA DH. While the Malawi government through ministry of health is imprementing safe motherhood program through the promotion of spouses in the participation of antenatal clinic to postnatal clinic,it is opposite with Likoma district hospital. According to a nurse on duty(name withheld)on the night of 14th March the hospital is partly managed by both the Malawi gorvenment and the church,as a christian institution it is not admissible to any male spouse cheer with their wives before, during and after delivery until such time when their wives are discharged. We were also surprised during our first days of our work here at the island hospital.Every patient has the right to be cheered with his/her relatives and friends so too is in the martenity ward. he said. The nurse further told this reporter we are abide by the bylaws,we cant do otherwise. Making complaints on the same were a group of men who were broked at the maternity ward entry ön the same night ,why are we only important during HIV test and not with the proceedings of safe motherhood. they said concealing their identities for fèar of jeopardiising the healthcare of their loved ones in the hopital. As this was not enough guardians also complained of the delay in delivery service as two expectant mother s who went through ceasarian caught nothing when their babies stopped breathing in the womb five minutess before ceaser. Efforts to seek causes of this development proved futile as nurses on duty this day mounted a strong shield to cover the authorities. Likoma has only one hospital whose referral is Nkhatabay district hospital whereby a refe rred patient must go deep into the pocket to pay for water vessel on lake Malawi.
