NWOBHM SKÝRZLA: Spikfeitt í þetta sinnið. Sérkennileg, þar sem ég er að rýna mikið í franskt þungarokk frá sama tíma, en það er eðli málsins skvt. ekki British. En alltént, einkar athyglisvert ferðalag. Sortilege það besta og Lu$t mjög skemmtilegt. Svo eru þarna skrif um Jaguar frá Bristol líka, meh NWOBHM band eins og svo mörg. --- Jaguar - Power Games: Anthology (2002) ---A compilation of three albums, singles and radio sessions, including Power Games (1983) in its entirety. That album is the only one of any real interest. Fast, scorching and frenetic with generic and samey songwriting but does the job quite well. The second album is a terrible and sugary AOR and then an interesting comeback album, which tries to set the record straight. It rocks but still, the pants are down in many aspects, old geezers trying to sound modern and not quite getting it. FRANSKT Lu$t - Well never die (1988) ---Funny, insecure, voice that gives this a weird delicate touch. They say that the french version of 80s heavy metal/NWOBHM is more fragile and melancholic than say, the UK and US versions and we can for sure bestow that on this output. I like it, strange charm and very different from the usual NWOBHM Strattson - Ouf Metal (1985) ---Entertaining! Bordering on speed metal, a black singer and a lot of songs in french. Many songs pretty mindless and generic but the overall weirdness is alluring. Nightmare - Waiting for the Twilight (1984) ---This is good. The band is tight and shows some chops, the songs well written and constructed.Very concise and impressive debut. The singing is funny, but that only adds to the magic. Nightmare - Power of the Universe (1985) ---A shadow of the debut. More clean, shiny and commercial - but at the same time directionless, weak and unimpressive. Lacking the magic Blaspheme - Desir de Vampyr (1985) ---Sung in french, which is a plus. A lean, mean affair, slightly dark overtones and the band comes off as fully formed. Fine songwriting but the procedure a tad predictable as we get further into the album. Sortilège - Sortilège EP (1983) ---The CD includes six English version tracks as a bonus. This is really good. High quality, refined speed metal/early thrash. Reminds me of Mercyful Fate. The best of the lot up to this point. Sortilège - Métamorphose (1984) ---High falsetto, sometimes faltering. More melodic and refined songwriting wise. The music and the playing is very assured, a great band, but this softening up comes with a warning sign. Sortilège - Larmes de héros (1986) ---Getting quite proggy. Impressive, ambitious and the whole package faultless as before, but not quite my cup of tea. I see why Schuldiner was so enamoured. A great band, but the EP is the best one (surprise, surprise..) High Power - High Power (1983) ---No nonsense NWOBHM/Speed metal with french singing. A bit uneven, the fast songs are brilliant but some of the slow ones a misfire. But on the whole; a tight, galloping gem of an album! ADX - Execution (1985) ---Starts promisingly enough but quickly turns into quite characterless speed metal affair. ADX - La Terreur (1986) ---In a weird way, more entertaining than the debut. Its got more twin guitars! ADX - Suprématie (1987) ---More of the same. A certified 7/10! Vulcain - Rock n Roll Secours (1984) ---Raw and gritty and I see why they are called The French Motorhead. It certainly rocks, the singer growls and the songs do the job. Fine, simple and effective stuff. Very fine actually. Quite different from the gentle, melancholic stuff above. Vulcain - Desperados (1985) ---More of the same but regularly nice oddities and nuances. I like this band!
