[NYC] parents, elected officials call for accountability after pre-K sites health violations revealed (NYDailyNews - June 2, 2014) EXCERPT: Parents and politicians demanded more transparency in the safety of pre-K schools following a Daily News probe into health-code violations by the community-based groups that run them. One parent suggested the city adopt a letter grade system similar to the one used for restaurants. It should be public, said Michelle Boice, an office manager whose daughters are enrolled in a Brooklyn Pre-K program. They should do a letter grade system based on the violations. A lot of parents would want to see that. Mayor de Blasio is expanding pre-K seats from 20,000 to 50,000 this fall, relying heavily on community-based groups to run these programs. The News found 51 sites around the city where community-based groups have run up 50 or more health code violations dubbed critical or public health hazards in the last five years. That includes 16 now run by the citys Universal Pre-K program.
