Nadir Dedic and Fatima Dedic are the only Roma who survived Jasenovac, the second largest extermination camp that had taken many Roma lives. He was arrested in the fall of 1942 when the II World War stroke Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nadir Dedic was considered as political prisoner by fake accusation that he set fire to the hay as signal to the liberators. “It was that Gipsy boy who did it” was enough so Mr. Dedic ends-up in the camp where thousands of Roma were already facing their destiny to be killed in a barbaric way by Ustasha Croatian fascist group. Together with his wife Fatima, he spent 4.5 terrifying months in the concentration camp. Jasenovac was an extermination camp established in Croatia during World War II where around 20.000 Roma perished. Mr. Dedic shared an emotional and extremely touching testimony with participants of Barvalipe- the 3rd Roma Pride Summer School. It was the first time happening within Barvalipe Summer School that individuals were praised and history awarded. Mr. Dedic was unanimously selected as one of the heroes that future Romani generations should never forget. Heroes should be praised and celebrated! In this respect the participants of Barvalipe Summer School handed over an Appreciation Award to Mr. Dedic. Barvalipe is a summer school that aims to strengthen pride and identity of Roma youngsters. The ultimate goal of Barvalipe is to create a young Roma community that will be knowledgeable and capable to use the tools of active citizenship in promoting Roma interests.
