Nakuru has a population of about 1.7 million people and a poverty rate of 40.1% (Kenya Integrated Household Budget Survey). About 45.8 of the residents live in urban while 54.2 live in rural areas. Over 50% of the population has no access to water and an equally large population consumes unprotected water. This water either has excess fluoride or is untreated for micro-organisms. Treatment is done through chlorination. Most of the rural population depends on rivers, streams, springs, boreholes and shallow wells.
