Names that are important in our family: All names are important but there are a few names that have more signifigance than others or maybe you have inherited one of these ancient names and wonder why. It is not uncommon for children (especially in the Cook Islands) to be named after a person, an event or even a place. Inherited names generally are a reminder to all of those that have passed on and of the respect and admiration we have for that person, we naturally bestow that honor upon our children. If you are lucky enough to have that honor of having one of our tupunas names, count yourself blessed. Tinomana Enuarurutini: Ariki Chief of Puaikura and at one time tINOMANA ruled all of Rarotonga with an iron hand and as a result caused unrest amongst the Rarotongans. Was the first chief to receive the chrisitan gospel, disposed of all idol gods and maraes and restored peace amongst the inhabitants of Rarotonga. Married one of his original 3 wives and released the other 2. When his elected wife Tepori died, he took a another wife. Her name was Poroiti or Pivai of which there were no children from that union. Te Vaerua: Daughter of King Enuarurutini and direct descendant to our family. Her family line has held the Tinomana title 7 times. The only existing living line from Enuarurutinis union to Tepori. Orometua Papehia Snr: Originally came from Raiatea, Tahiti. Very well respected with Tinomana Enuarurutini. Married the daughter of Tinomana Enuarurutini, Te Vaerua. They had 8 children. Isaia Papehia: 5th son to the union of Te Vaerua and Papehia Snr. Like his father, he became a minister. Educated in England, he found his wife while visitng Mangaia and brought her back to Rarotonga, Louisa Agostini. Isaia Papehia became the minister of the same church his father was. That is the church that stands today in Arorangi. Louisa Agostini: Not much is written about Louisa but her background has made her name famous amongst our family. You will see the name Louisa and the name Agostini just about everywhere through our history books. Her mother was from Mangaia and her father was a full blooded Corsican which is an island that sits off the coast of Italy. It is where Napoleon was exiled and where he spent his remaining days. Over the centuries, Corsica has been ruled by nations such as the French, Italians, Romanians and the Macedonians. Now theres a geneology challenge! Rangitai Heather nee Papehia: Daughter and 3rd child to Isaia and Louisa Papehia. Of all her brothers and sisters only she had children. She married Stanley Heather Snr and had only the 1 son named Stanley Heather Jnr. From them, our family descend from. Both Stanley Heather Jnr and Teupoko Exham, they had 15 children with Papa Joe being their 5th. Had it not been for Rangitai and Stanley Heather Snr, we would not have been here today and the Isaia and Louisa Papehia line would have died out. Stanley Heather Snr: Married the 3rd child of Isaia and Louisa. Her name was Rangitai. Stanley Heather, although originally from England or Scotland (still being debated) actually landed on the shores of Rarotonga from none other than New Zealand. We also have links to the New Zealand Maori tribe of Ngati Mahanga in the North Island.
