Native-speakers of English, please pay attention! I have a grammatical question concerning sequence of tenses. In grammar books and textbooks learners are taught to use sequence of tenses in complex subordinate clauses, like the main clause and the subordinate clause should always be used for ex. both in present or past tenses. Let me bring an example. You are in the present moment telling your friend smth which smb told you in the past but the action itself hasn´t happened yet, like ´´Tom told me he will call me.´´ According to the grammatical rule the second part of the sentence should be in the past tense as well. So, I´m curious now whether you Native-speakers always follow this rule of using sequence of tenses as it is prescribed in grammar?
