Nature Awareness 4/28/2014 - Boxelder Boxelder is native to portions of the southern tier and Susquehana Valley, but has become more broadly established throughout many parts of the state. Boxelder grows commonly along the banks of streams and rivers, and may occur as a weedy species in urban areas where its seeds are able to germinate. Boxelder has a soft wood that has no commercial value, but is important for wildlife and the stabilization of stream banks where it grows. Due to their use for stabilization of an area and fundamental contribution to native wildlife, the boxelder has been considered connected to the concepts of home, hearth, and the stability of both. A nurturing presence with the practical strength to endure. It reminds us all that it is in our ability to persist, to hang in there, that we can oftentimes do the most good for the greatest number of beings.
