Nearly 1.3 million children from poorest families in Britain are living in areas where they cannot be provided with sufficient childcare, a charity survey finds. British charity organization Family and Childcare Trust warned that a “crisis” in affordable childcare is disproportionately hurting poorer families in England and Wales. The organization’s head of policy and research, Jill Rutter, said nearly 1.3 million children under the age of five are currently living in places with insufficient childcare, including nursery places. It is working families in deprived areas and in the countryside that are most affected by gaps in provision, Rutter said, adding that these children account for more than a third of all under-fives in England and Wales. According to reports, around 65 percent of nurseries in Britain are run by the private sector with the situation being particularly acute in eastern England, Wales, and the south east. Rutter warned that leaving childcare largely to the private sector is not working. The charity’s head of policy and research also urged the government to tackle the problem with urgent action and funding. This is a crisis in poorer areas, where struggling families are trying to get themselves out of poverty. If local authorities dont provide enough childcare they should be taken to task,” she added. Critics say this scale of poverty puts Britain at risk of becoming a place where rich and poor children live in separate, parallel worlds.
