Negative Theology I have been posting examples of negative or apophatic theology this week from around the world. This approach has often been condemned as atheistic because it does not attempt to capture the sacred in images, but prefers to live in a reverent kind of unknowing. One of the greatest expressions of negative theology is the Ashtavakra Gita of Hinduism: Dissolving You are pure. 1 Nothing touches you. What is there to renounce? Let it all go, The body and the mind. Let yourself dissolve. Like bubbles in the sea, 2 All the worlds arise in you. Know you are the Self. Know you are one. Let yourself dissolve. You see the world. 3 But like the snake in the rope, It is not really there. You are pure. Let yourself dissolve. You are one and the same 4 In joy and sorrow, Hope and despair, Life and death. You are already fulfilled. Let yourself dissolve.
