Neither Can I By: Danny Wallace “But now hath He obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.” The hardest thing for mortal man to do is to let go of the old, and step into the new. You see it everyday as “change” only brings more anti-depressants as a means to cope with letting go of the familiar, in return for that which is unfamiliar, no matter how new and exciting the “new” may prove to be. So it is with letting go of the Old Covenant Law and truly living with Jesus in the New Covenant of Grace that God Himself said was “His choice,” for mankind, and absolutely necessary to set men free. We cannot bear to let go of the Old Covenant completely, but neither can we turn our back completely on the cross. Therefore, we do as the Galatians did and stipulate our own limitations to the glorious truth of Calvary’s cross. Nevertheless, this idea remains no less folly than when Paul said, “Have you lost your minds? How is it you have come to believe that you can finish what you did not begin?” For over 2000 years we have continued to prepare a religious mixture of our own. We borrow what we want from Grace and proceed to keep people in line with the rules of Law. It is a dangerous mixture, for each man’s line is blurred by his own religious arrogance. Paul told the church that practicing this same concept was the equivalent to being “hexed,” having abandoned the fulfillment of Jesus Christ for a former burden which God had nailed to a tree – breaking its curse forever. Paul couldn’t understand why anyone who had once beheld the glory of Christ would ever go back and submit themselves to that which God Himself had said was inferior to deliver them. In fact, he said, “Never again receive this burden on your back. You are no longer slaves to the Law, but free in Jesus.” Paul couldn’t understand it and to tell you the truth, having been noosed by one, and set free by the other…neither can I.
