Nelsons Sparrow Copyright(C) Shawn Fitzpatrick This bird is a rare vagrant to Newfoundland, that has been located recently on Cape Spear. It is a bird that is difficult to find in the first place because it is more likely to be found moving about under the cloak of protective grasses that it forages in. AND, is why I chose this photo of mine to showcase it in the habitat that is most natural to this particular species. Its also noteworthy to know that until 1995, it was considered to be the same species as another bird which it closely resembles, that of the Salt-marsh Sparrow. Usually, it (Nelsons), is found either because youve flushed it out as you walk through such aforementioned vegetation, or youve noticed it pop up and fly briefly before diving back down into a spot close to where it arose from. The movement of the grasses on non windy days are a good point of interest for finding this bird. Cape Spear, however, isnt known for its lack of wind, and as such, in a place like it, youre more likely going to come across it as a result of flushing it!
