Net Literacy, Indiana Afterschool Network and Storage Express are excited to announce a 500-Computer Giveaway for nonprofits and out-of-school time programs (and especially those that are using Windows XP)! A Special Thanks to Storage Express and Indianapolis Councillor Jefferson Shreve for Donating Free Storage! Date: We will survey interested groups to find the most convenient date on September 14th (Saturday), September 18th (Wednesday), or September 22nd (Sunday before the 2013 Multi-State 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) Conference). Computer Pickup Time: 10:00 am - 1:00 pm EST Purpose: provide computers for nonprofits and out-of-school time programs that have computer labs. Details: 1. The giveaway includes computers only. There are no monitors, keyboards, mice, or power cords. 2. These computers are only available to nonprofits that will use them to refresh, build or expand a computer lab. Supplies of these refurbished computers are limited. 3. The highest priority candidates are nonprofits that are using computers with Windows XP software because this software is no longer being supported by Microsoft as of April 2014. This means that any lab using computers with XP as an operating system will have to: a) replace the computer; b) upgrade the operating system to Windows 7 or 8, or c) disconnect the computers from the internet because they would be wide open to viruses and hackers. However, you do not need to have XP to be eligible. 4. These are Gateway 2800 computers that come with Lenox Software as the operating system (instead of Windows). The computers include Office Lebre, which is similar to and compatible with Microsoft office (i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint but are called different names like Writer, Spreadsheet and Presenter). If you send a document using Office Lebre, it can be opened by someone with Microsoft Office and vice versa. 5. Net Literacy is a student-managed afterschool nonprofit where students conduct all of the volunteering. These are some of the more than 25,000 re-purposed computers that student volunteers have re-purposed. 6. There is no support available for computer installation, technical assistance, etc. Nonprofits receiving donated computers will be asked to sign a letter indicating that they understand there is no warranty and that the computers are being donated on an "as is" basis. Criteria for Participation: 1. Computers must be used to refresh, build or expand a computer lab. 2. Nonprofit organization 3. Be able to pick up the computers 4. Register with this survey (surveymonkey/s/K9TQFTR?utm_source=Computer+Giveaway+for+nonprofits+and+out-of-school+time+programs&utm_campaign=comp+giveaway&utm_medium=email) Deadline: All computer request surveys must be submitted no later than July 22nd.
