“Never surrender” As a result of my past behavior they placed me in the worst school in the Lansing area where all the gang bangers, thugs, and drug dealers were. We had all been in Juvy and were all on probation with the same probation officer, Randy Smith. I was 14 years old, the youngest kid at Pecham and my dad had just bought a trailer in Delhi Manor Trailer Park, in Holt. My road dogg Josh L. lived in the same trailer park and walked with me every day to the Cata bus stop. We took the city bus from Holt to downtown, where all the worst kids in the area got off the bus from every side of the city and then we all then got back on another Cata city bus that took us to our school on the North Side of Lansing. During this time I was 14 years old and had become a criminal, shoplifting was a must, doing case runs, breaking and entering, selling weed and LSD just to name a few things. I also was beat into a local set of V.L.s I met at Peckam. The rules at the program Peckam had were set up so that if you did not go to school a couple times they would arrest you and throw you in Juvy. On this day my road dogg Josh L. was tipped off that they were coming to arrest him, he looked at me and said, “You going on the run with me for awhile?” I said, “You know I’m down.” They let us have a 15 minute bathroom break and Josh L. and I dipped to the Cata bus stop a couple blocks over. When we got off the city bus back in Holt our older homeboy was driving by with a friend, we jumped in and drove to their spot. They wanted to plan out a case run, where I walk in a store and grab a 24 pack case of beer and walk out. If the store employee’s would chase me just kept running past the parking lot and stay on foot. If they don’t chase me then jump in the car waiting about a block over. Later this would escalate into armed robberies. This day I had money from some of the work I had been putting in on the street. I had a couple hundred dollars and a fat sack, so I did not want to take a chance of getting caught by the cops and lose my stuff over beer. My homies had stole cases of Sysco and were daring me drink it thinking it would loosen me up to do the case run for beer, they were tired of Sysco. I was 14 and I thought the liquor wasn’t that strong …but it catches up fast, before I knew it I was drunk. My friends liked to play tricks on me , me being the youngest of the group, this time they blew pepper in my eyes and I bugged out, swinging for the fences against older dudes. I don’t remember much after that, just waking up at my trailer with my dad hitting me and I was swinging back, first time I ever hit him back. I got up, got dressed and tried to locate my money. When I could not find it I got mad and asked my dad where it was, he said he did not know what I was talking about. Then I acted like I was going out to smoke a cigarette and ran off to Josh L.’s my homeboy’s trailer to find my money. As I went to knock on the door it opened and they Josh snatched me in, “Where you been at?” He asked. “Man I woke up at home. How did I get home?” Josh told me that when I fought them they let me go because they did not want to knock me out. I asked where my money was and he swore he had no idea; I was pissed off. I was not going home to fight my dad again and I had left school in the middle of the day with Josh. “Where is a gun?” I asked. Josh said he was not going to give me a gun because I was not thinking straight. I got up, opened the kitchen drawer and grabbed the biggest knife I saw, a butcher knife. I ran out of the house to rob the first person I saw. As I ran out of the door and onto the road Josh was ride behind me. “Dude” “Where are you going?” He asked. I told him I was robbing the first person I saw. We jumped a fence and walked down a side road toward Cedar Street. It was dark so my guess is the time was close to 9pm. When I saw two people walking toward us and I got my knife ready to whip out and demand cash. As we got close to them I did just that, whipped out my butcher knife and said, “Give me all your money now!” They backed up and started to run, and as they did I realized it was my cousin Kevin and our dude Randy L. “Dude, it’s us.” They said. I explained to them briefly that I was robbing someone. They gave me a black mask, actually a winter hat that we carved holes into. On to the next target, the corner store by Edru Roller Skating Ring. I approached Cedar Street by myself; I had left my friends behind. I looked across the busy street and saw a lady inside a little gas station booth alone. I was standing in an automotive repair parking lot and as I waited for the cars to clear the gas station parking lot I fixed my mask and got my knife ready. Later the Salon ladies would tell the cops that while they were on their final cigarette break they seen the glean of my big knife reflecting off the streetlight as I stood in the automotive repair parking lot. They called 911 before I crossed the street. The cars cleared out and I ran across the street to do the deed. I walked in the door and she had her back turned to me. I yelled at her, she turned around, and I said, “Give me all the money or die!” as I came half over the counter leaning with the knife up and out. I did not want to hurt an innocent women but I wanted her to move fast. She opened the cash register and started stacking money on the counter. 1’s, 5’, 10’s, “Where is the real money!” I screamed at her. She nervously placed some receipts on the counter and I jabbed at her hand with the knife and cut the top of her hand. Just then a big truck drove up going really fast. The gas station attendant said to me, “You better go!”, and I did running 1oo miles per hour with cash flying out of my hands into the parking lot and road. The truck did not run me over but followed me thru the parking lot and across Cedar Street. I ran across a small field thru the snow, I jumped the fence into a yard and the truck had to stop there. I saw the man in the truck on a CB talking and the truck had police lights on it. Later I would learn that the guy was a volunteer fireman who lived in the apartments behind the automotive repair shop. He had been listing to his police scanner and wanted to get an I.D. on the robber so he hopped in his truck and tracked me as far as he could. I knew the cops would be around soon so I stuffed the cash into my pockets, buried the knife in the snow, and threw the mask down so that I looked like a normal 14 year old kid walking down the road. I knocked on the first door I saw of someone that I knew. It was a girl from school, Marissa, but she was not home her mom said. “Can I use your bathroom please?” My dad beat me up and I don’t want to go home.” OK, fine go ahead and use the bathroom.” When I got out of the bathroom Marissa’s mom wanted me to go so I offered her some money to drive me a couple blocks around to Delhi Manor. Later I would learn that when she got home the cops were waiting with dog’s and she told them she had just given me a ride to Delhi Manor. I was a kid so I did not know where else to go. She dropped me off at Randy’s trailer and then I walked to Josh’s, no one was answering the door. I walked to my friend Dave’s trailer and they had a small party going on. Dave said that he did not want me around because he knew the cops were looking for me and I was under age. “Dang it man.” I thought. “I am stuck in the cold with money and nowhere to go!” I decided to try Greg’s trailer. Bingo. He answered the door and let me inside; I thought he was cool so I told him what I did. Bad move on my part, all he wanted was for me to leave. This time as I walked down the road I saw a cop car. It pulled up and stopped in front of me. A lady cop got out by herself and asked me to turn around and cuff up. I said, “What for?” She said, “You know what for Guy Spinner.” “Now get down on the ground.” I hit my cigarette and flicked it into her face as I took off running. She got into her police car and tried to track me down. I was in my trailer park and quickly lost her between trailers. When I popped out the other side of the trailers there was more cop cars so I ducked underneath a trailer where the bottom siding was missing a couple pieces. I was in there a minute when I heard footsteps and someone speaking on a radio. Then I heard a dog sniffing as the policeman let him stick his head under the trailer, holding him by the leash. The dog started barking like crazy and I heard the po-po telling the other po-po on the radio that he found me under a trailer. They asked for directions but he did not know the trailer number. I heard him running toward the front of the trailer, with the dog I hoped, to get the trailer number. I took off running and got off to a descent head start as he was still getting the trailer number. A couple steps was all I needed. He heard me and chased but I disappeared behind a couple trailers and dipped into a snow and ice covered car. The car was in the driveway of a woman I sold weed to sometimes so if they came out and found me it would be ok. I sat in that car for an hour watching police cars drive by again and again. It was cold, I was sober now and out of cigarettes. They brought the dogs by the car twice but each time kept going. My scent was all over the trailer park. I cut through this ladies yard all the time because I knew her and the dogs were just running in circles. I remember when there had been some breaking and entering’s going on a few months ago and they had the dogs following my scent all over the trailer park in circles. Eventually I got out and walked to randy’s trailer. He answered the door and was shocked to see me, it was about 4am. “Dude, how did you get away the cops are everywhere man.” Randy said as he peered out the front window. Dude, you have to go because the cops been by here with the dog’s looking for you and I don’t want to get into trouble with you. I made him a deal with him for a few cigarettes and a blanket. I walked to the Cata City bus stop and waited for the Cata bus as I laid down behind some bushes close to the bus stop. Finally the first bus of the morning came and I got onto it. The bus driver was probably a little suspicious of how I looked but he seen me every day and did not blink. I rode the Cata bus around Lansing for a couple hours, in a couple of big circles. After a while I got off the bus at Burger King in Holt and went in to eat breakfast. While I was there I called Elain, a girl I knew from school using a pay phone and told her everything that happen. She said she would be home at lunch time if I wanted to stop over then. On her way to school she told her friend about the plan and her friend told her consoler, who called the police and told them my location. I was sitting there eating when about 5 cop cars all pulled up to each door. I had placed the cash I had into a burger king bag and when I saw them put the cash in the trash. They came in each door and slowly walked over to me, “Are you Guy Sinner?” They asked me. “No b@#$%^” ,I told them but they jumped on me and slammed me against the window, then down to the ground. Old ladies were screaming and the worker dude was laughing. The cops hand cuffed me and drug me out to the police car. All the police gathered around and were giving each other high fives talking about, “Last night was the B team and we are the A team.” I was 14.
