New "New Bible" A seventeen-year project to create another translation of the Bible has produced a new edition of the New American Bible. According to one report: One change may set off alarms with traditionalists, in a passage many Christians believe foreshadows the coming of Christ and his birth to a virgin. The 1970 version of Isaiah 7:14 says, "the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel." The 2011 text refers to "the young woman" instead of a virgin. It elaborates that the original Hebrew word, almah, may, or may not, signify a virgin (Grossman, 2011). Because the Bible is taken to represent the actual word of God, conflicting interpretations of the true meaning of various passages of the Bible have troubled many scholars and religious followers. Some feel this latest change raises a question mark regarding a central tenet of the Judeo-Christian tradition: virgin birth.
