New Orleans-Style Magical Help for Justice in the Trayvon Martin Case By Rev. Dee I’m busily getting my altar ready for the following spiritual help for a just verdict in the Trayvon Martin case and as I was on my way to the botanica for a candle, I realized, Doh! I know a perfect way to ask for justice, the way it’s done by practitioners of magic in New Orleans, and I turned around and went back home. You don’t need to go to the botanica to do this; if we all work together, we can get justice for Trayvon. As Manbo Sallie Anne Glassman and Houngan Kenaz Filan have said, among others, in New Orleans, the Vodou Loa Maman Brigitte is seen as a wise lawyer and judge, and often parents look to her to protect their young people from the corrupt police—especially if their children are young black males, who are more often abused by the police than others. The New Orleans police are so corrupt that the federal government is in NOLA to observe and hopefully change the situation. Speaking of corruption, several developments that seem to show some sort of bias have occurred in the case of George Zimmerman’s shooting of Trayvon Martin. One is that an IT officer from the State of Florida who told the truth on the witness stand about mishandling of evidence in the case was just fired by the Florida Governor, an action that is against federal “whistle-blower” laws. This is still the South, folks, and prejudice does still exist there, as well as laws that allow people to pretty much shoot anyone they wish for any reason, no matter how ludicrous. Deliberations are happening NOW. So trust Rev. Dee and do this NOW: Clear a space on a table or your altar, anywhere but in your bedroom. Set up a purple or black glass candle for Maman Brigitte. Print out the veve below and glue it to your candle. If you have a black cloth for the altar, even better. If not, don’t worry about it. Now offer Maman Brigitte one or more of the following: Rum (I use Rhum Barbancourt, from Haiti) with hot pepper; hot chilies; cotton balls; or nettle tea. Sprinkle the candle with some rosemary or rosemary essential oil for remembrance of Trayvon. Speak or write (preferably both) your own prayer for justice. Here is an idea: Grande Brijit, a young man named Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teen, was killed by a armed man named George Zimmerman for no reason. It took a long time for his killer to be brought to trial. Now as the jury deliberates, we ask you that justice is done for Trayvon Martin and the killer pay for his crime in accordance with the just laws of the United States, not the unjust laws of Florida. Make sure his life was not in vain and hold him forever in your bosom and that of your husband, Baron Samedi. With the blessings of Bon Dieu, I know you will triumph. Ashé, Grande Brijit. Ashé, Rev. Dee
