Professor (Soil Science), KK Wagh College of Agriculture Saraswati Nagar, Panchavati, Nashik MH- 422003 ABSTRACT Field experiment was conducted on lysimeter during Rabi season of 2012-13 and 2013-14 to study the effect of combinations of irrigation schedules, irrigation methods and water table depths on growth, development and seed yield of yellow mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czernj and Cosson] in mollisols of Uttarakhand. Irrigation under shallow water table conditions (30±1.5 cm), plant height, number of leaves, LAI etc were gave better results over medium (60±1.5 cm) and deep water (90±1.5 cm) table conditions whereas irrigation scheduled at IW: CPE 1.0 with sprinkler method of irrigation gave better results. Irrigation scheduled at IW: CPE 0.5 under shallow water table conditions with sprinkler method of irrigation gave maximum seed yield (1187.6 kg ha-1) with 2 to 3 irrigation. Total root length (TRL), root length density (RLD) and root dry mass (RDM) were higher under shallow water table conditions with irrigation scheduled at IW: CPE 1.0 through sprinkler method of irrigation. Results also showed that water table contribution and total water use were maximum (322.9 mm and 547.2 mm, respectively) in case of 30±1.5 cm water table conditions with irrigation scheduled at IW: CPE 1.0 (304.6 mm and 548.9 mm, respectively) with sprinkler method (286.6 mm and 541.2 mm, respectively) of irrigation while water use efficiency was maximum in case of 90±1.5 cm water table conditions with irrigation scheduled at IW: CPE 0.5 with sprinkler method of irrigation (2.45, 2.91 and 2.31, respectively). Thus application of 2 to 3 irrigation through sprinkler method under shallow water table condition was best for seed yield maximization in yellow mustard in mollisols of tarai region of India. Key words: LAI, TRL, RLD, RDM, ET, WUE, and yield parameters.
