New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof says Powers impact at the U.N. is unique: She is passionate in a chamber that frankly doesnt have a lot of passion.... One can get the impression that diplomacy is about resolutions, about paper, about cocktail parties. Samantha knows that whats at stake is the lives of people in very remote parts of the world who dont have a voice. Thought leaders like CNNs Christiane Amanpour, a 2005 Glamour Woman of the Year, say that Powers muscular approach to standing up for human rights is a tactic whose time is now. She is in a position of influence, Amanpour says, at a time when that influence is needed most. Her article, Bystanders to Genocide, is the only article Ive had to read for class that ever moved me to tears. The world has failed the voiceless too many times; shes spent her career spotlighting these failures, studying them and now attempting to prevent them. So much admiration for this lady.
